Facebook Messenger and Instagram have joined, more than 18 months after the chief executive of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg announced its intention to integrate the two platforms.
The old direct mail service Instagram Direct has been replaced by the Messenger, allowing users to send chat, photos and videos between the two platforms for the first time. This was the first step towards the goal announced in March 2019 by combining the two platforms, combining WhatsApp and enabling encryption end-to-end for all messages sent between the three applications.
Important Statements:
“We’re connecting Messenger and Instagram experience to bring some of the best Messenger features to Instagram,” Facebook Adam Mosseri and Stan Chudnovsky, head of Instagram and their Apostle, said in a statement. “People in Instagram can decide whether to immediately update to this new experience.”
The executives wrote: “In our study, four out of five people using messaging applications in the US that spends more time in contact with friends and family, but one of three people sometimes find it difficult to remember where to find a particular conversation thread.
With this update, it will be more convenient to stay connected without thinking about the applications that will be used to reach friends and family. “
The integration of the two applications requires particular user permissions to allow their accounts to be merged so that Facebook offers new features as a carrot to encourage take-up. If the company accepts the update, users will send a “selfie sticker”, watch videos on Instagram with friends during video calls, and can remove or un-send any previous message.
Launch of New Features:
Facebook said that the new features would be launched in “some countries” early and globally “soon”. There was also no timescale for the controversial plan announced by the Zuckerberg in March 2019.
“We’re still determining how the cross-application communication will work with WhatsApp” said the Facebook spokesman. “WhatsApp will continue to remain separate, application end-to-end encrypted at the moment.”
The initial announcement was widely criticized as perceived efforts to proactively protect Facebook from antitrust enforcement that could be forced to spin-off WhatsApp or Instagram into a separate company. Zuckerberg believes it is necessary to change the heart of the company.
Zuckerberg added, “If we do this well, we can make a platform for the private share which could be more important to people than the platform we have built to help people share and connect in a more open environment”.

While this may be good for user privacy, but anything from intimidation, fraud and illegal drug sales to pedophilia cannot be monitored if it happens through this tool.
This will stop Facebook blamed for purposes of offensive or illegal services. As far as platforms go for moderation, Facebook is effectively going to be “invisible” (not to mention expensive and complicated moderation).
This news is all good for Mark Zuckerberg, mainly because Facebook is staring down the barrel of potential antitrust litigation. Messaging traffic across the Facebook platform is extensive, more than 100 billion messages are sent every day. And this increased during the COVID 19th pandemic.
