    How to Setup iSCSI for ESXi in FreeNAS

    In this article, I will explain to you how to setup iSCSI for ESXi in FreeNAS. I have setup a VMware ESXi 7.0 server and connect it as an iSCSI datastore.

    It is not very difficult, The FreeNAS web GUI makes it easy to enable iSCSI and set up a storage volume as an iSCSI target, and you can connect it using the ESXi web GUI using software iSCSI.

    Enabling the iSCSI service in FreeNAS

    1- Open web browser, type FreeNAS IP address, and hit enter. Type your credentials and then click login.

    3- To enable iSCSI Service, click on the Services tab, and then enable iSCSI, Start Automatically.

    How to create a new storage volume to share in FreeNAS

    4- Select Storage, select Pools, and then ADD.

    5- Choose create new pool checkbox, and then select create pool.

    6- Type a unique name and then select the disk you want to share as iSCSI share.

    7- Click on the error key to select the disk and then click create.

    8- Select the confirm checkbox and then click create pool.

    How to Add Zvol

    9- Next to the pool we need to create the storage volume in. Take note of how much space you have available, then select three dots and select Add Zvol.

    10- zvol name – type a vzol name.
    Comments – a description
    Size for this zvol – choose the volume size you want to create.
    Now click SAVE to create the new Zvol.

    12- How to setup iSCSI to share the new volume
    Select the Sharing tab and then Block (iSCSI)
    Select the Portals tab and then click the ADD button.

    13- Description – type a description
    IP Address – Enter the IP of an existing network interface that you want the portal to existing on. If you click the box it should expand to show you the currently available IPs.
    Port – The TCP port the default is 3260.
    Click SAVE to create the portal.

    14- We need to create an Initiator to attach to the portal so it can initiate requests to and receive responses from iSCSI target(s). Select the Initiators tab and then click on ADD.

    15- Select Allow All initiators and then save button.

    16- Select targets and click ADD.

    17- Target Name – type a name for your target.
    Target Alias – a user-friendly name
    Portal Group ID – Select the ID of the portal group we created earlier.
    Initiator Group ID – Select the ID of the initiator group we created earlier.
    Click SAVE to create the target.

    18- Create the Extents tab and then click ADD.

    19- Extent name – The name of the extent.
    Extent type – Select Device.
    Device – Click here to select the Zvol we created earlier.
    Under description select enable TPC
    Select Enabled and then click SAVE to create the extent.

    20- Select the Associated Targets tab and then click ADD.

    21- Target –select the target we created earlier.
    LUN ID – Enter a number between 0 and 1023.
    Extent – Click to select the extent we just created.
    Click save to associate the extent with the target.

    22- You will be returned to the Associated Targets tab and see the newly available target.

    To add iSCSI FreeNAS to VMware vCenter vSphere Environment.

    1- Login to VMware vCenter and select a host in the navigation pane.
    Select the Configure tab, select Storage Adapters under storage and then select Add Software Adapter,

    3- Select vmhba65 (the iSCSI software adapter), and then clicked Rescan Adapter and OK. Select the Dynamic Discovery tab and then click Add.

    4- In the Add Send Target Server, enter the IP address of the FreeNAS system in the ISCSI Server text field and then click ok.

    5- Select Rescan Adapter.

    6- Right-click on the ESXi host, select Storage and then New Datastore.

    NFS stands for Network File System. It is used to allow users to access files/directory across a network.
    NFS permits the user to mount all or a portion of a file system throughout the network. The share portion of the file system that is mounted could be accessed by clients with have privileges like read-only or read-write.

    Type your FreeNAS server IP address on the web browser.
    FreeNAS is a free & open-source software network-attached storage (NAS) system based on the FreeBSD system. FreeNAS operating system supports Windows, OS X & Unix clients, and various virtualization hosts such as XenServer and VMware. To configure the NFS share on FreeNAS, please follow the below steps.
    1- Login to FreeNAS

    1- Log in to VMware vSphere client, navigate to Storage and then click New datastore.

    8- In the Virtual Disk Properties, choose a virtual device node:
    If you need to replace an existing virtual disk, select a virtual disk node. The original disk will be deleted.
    If we want to attach the recovered disk to the Virtual Machine as a new disk, select the virtual disk node that is not occupied yet.

    9- I am not selecting this option because I am just testing in my home lab so I click next.

    In this article, I will explain how to create an Azure Storage Account, Container adding this to your Veeam Backup & Replication, and creating a Scale-Out Backup Repository with a performance tier and capacity tier.
    This new storage tier is called Capacity Tier and it can be coupled with a Scale-Out Backup Repository, which then is the Performance Tier of the tiered solution. Actually, Veeam does not use the new Capacity Tier as a direct target for backup and backup copy jobs, fairly a new mechanism has been introduced. Let see how it works & how then a service provider can design his storage with this new capability.
    Veeam Cloud Tier enables institutions to natively tier backup files to Microsoft Azure Blob, providing the ability to scale infinitely and leverage the simplicity and elasticity of object storage.

    First, we need to create a Microsoft Azure Storage Account to create the cloud repository

    1- Open the Veeam console, select Backup Infrastructure. Select Backup Repositories and then select Add Backup Repository.

    5- Enter a name and a description for this backup repository and then click next.

    7- Specify the storage account name, shared key and then click OK.

    9- Select the blob container and click on browse button next to folder.

    11- Here you can also limit the storage consumption in this backup repository and click next.

    Create the Scale-Out Backup Repository

    1- In the Veeam console, select Scale-Out Backup Repository and then select Add Scale-Out Backup Repository.

    2- Enter a name, a description for this SOBR (Scale-out backup repository) and click on Next.

    3- In the performance tier option, click the add button to add your On-Premise backup repositories.

    4- I have already created a local backup repository name (Backup Repository cloud). Select your local backup repository and then click OK.

    6- Select Data locality as a placement policy and click next.

    7- Choose Azure object storage repository as object storage. Then select the file ages to be moved in Microsoft Azure. Click override.

    8- Also you can move files depending on the used space. Choose your choice, click ok and then Apply.

    Create a Backup Job Veeam

    1- To create a Backup Job to take advantage of the Immutability feature.
    Choose the home tab, select backup job, and then virtual machine.

    2- Type backup job name and then click next.

    4- Select the object (virtual machine) to backup and then click add

    6- In the configuration wizard select from the Backup repository drop-down menu the just created Scale-out Repository (local backup repository) and click next.

    10- During the first operation, a Full Backup is being performed.

    Move backups to Azure Object Storage

    If you would like to test the archival process, after the initial Full Backup previously processed, you should perform some additional backups. At least three additional Incremental Backups and one more Active Full Backup.

    1- In this picture you can find 2 full backups 3 increments backup.

    2- To move backups immediately to the selected Azure Object Storage. Select your Azure scale-out repository and then click edit scale-out repository.

    3- Select Capacity Tier option, select Move backup files older than field set to 0, and then click finish.

    4- Keep the CTRL button and right-click on your Azure Scale-out Backup Repository and then select Run tiering job now.

    5- The offload process is performing and backups are moved to Azure Object Storage. I am testing in my home lab so I am stopping it.

    In this blog, I will explain how to copy backups to a secondary location, you need to configure a backup copy job. The Veeam backup copy job will defines how, where and when to copy backups. 1 job can be used to process backups of one or more machines.

    Create Backup Copy Job

    1- Open Veeam Backup & Replication console, select the Home tab, select Backup copy and then select Virtual machine

    2- New backup copy wizard, In the Name field, types a backup copy job name. Type a description for the copy job. The default description includes information about a user who creates the job, date & time when the job was created.
    Select Periodic copy (pruning) to copy the most recent restore points once within a backup copy.
    If you have selected a daily backup copy, specify the start time and then click on next

    3- New backup copy job wizard, Objects option, select VM machines whose to restore points you want to copy to a target Backup Repository, and then click on the Add button.

    6- New backup copy job, Target option, From the Backup repository list, selects a backup repository where you want to copy backups job.
    At the Restore points select keep option checkbox, specify the number of restore points that must be preserved on the target backup repository.
    Click on the Schedule button to define the schedule for creating GFS full backups.

    7- New backup copy job, data transfer option, select direct and then click OK.

    8- Select the schedule option when the job is allowed to transfer data over the network and then click Next.

    9- New backup copy job wizard, review the job summary, select enable the job when I click finish checkbox and then click finish

    Instant VM Recovery Veeam Backup

    Instant VM recovery Veeam, it will help you to improve recovery time objectives (RTO), minimize disturbance and downtime of production work burden. It is like having a temporary reserve for a workload: users remain productive while you can troubleshoot an issue with the failed workload.
    When Instant VM Recovery is carried out, Veeam Backup & Replication uses the Veeam vPower technology to mount a retrieved VM image to an ESXi host directly from a compressing and deduplicated backup file. After that no need to extract the VM from the backup file and copy it to production storage, you can perform restore from any restore point in a matter of minutes.

    1- Run Veeam Backup and Replication console and select Backups and then select the backup job. Right-click on Virtual Machine then one you want to create instant VM then click on Instant VM recovery.

    2- Instant VM recovery Wizard will open, so just select the Backup and click on the Next button.

    3- We are creating this instant Virtual Machine for testing purposes. Choose option Restore to a new location or different and click on the Next button.

    4- Now you can here define the name of instant Virtual Machine.
    So we need to select the ESXi Host where we need to restore and then just click on choose Host button.

    5- Now select the ESXi host here and then click on the OK button.

    6- After selecting the ESXi host and then click on the Next button.

    7- Select a Datastore where you need to restore. If you have multiple Datastore or leave it as default and click on the Next button.

    8- Select scan backup for viruses or else leave it default and click on the next button.

    9- Type a reason why you are restoring the Virtual Machine for identification and click on the Next button.

    10- Now we need to select the following option very carefully so please don’t select connect VM to network for avoiding IP address conflict select only power on VM automatically option and click on restore and wait for it.

    11- Instant VM recovery has been completed successfully so wait a few minutes to power on the Virtual Machine.

    Testing Recovered VMs

    Before migration recovered Virtual Machine to production, you can open VM consoles in Veeam Backup & Replication or in the VMware vSphere client.
    To open a Virtual Machine console in Veeam Backup and Replication:
    Select the Home tab, In the inventory pane, select the Instant Recovery option, In the working area, right-click a VM and select Open Virtual Machine console.

    13- Type credentials and click OK

    Migrating Recovered VMs

    Migrate click Quick Migration (will be provide the link as soon as possible)

    Stop publication Recovered Virtual Machine

    If the test has failed, you can stop publishing the recovered VMs. This will remove the restored VMs from the host that you selected as the destination for recovery.

    Note that all modifications made in the recovered VMs will be lost.

    To stop publishing a recovered VM

    1- Select the Home view, In the inventory option, select the Instant Recovery node, In the working area, right-click a VM and click Stop publishing.

    Create Account Wasabi S3 Bucket

    Configure long-term data retention with Azure repository

    Add a new Backup Repository

    1- Open Veeam, select the Backup Infrastructure tab, and select the Backup Repositories section. Click Add Backup Repository.

    4- Type repository Name, Description then click Next.

    5- Account, Insert Service Point address, and select Region by selecting between the available Wasabi datacenters.

    6- Enter your Wasabi “Access key” and the “Secret Key” retrieved from the Wasabi Management Console then click OK.

    8- Bucket, based on specified credentials, Veeam fetches the Bucket you have configured in Wasabi (wasabibuckets3). Select Browse to select an existing folder

    9- To create a new folder, click on New Folder button type a folder name to store your backups and then click OK.

    10- Enable Limit object storage consumption to & specify the limit to 1TB. When the limit is surpassed, no new tasks will be executed. Choose recent backup immutable and then click Next.

    11- Click finish to create the Wasabi Backup Repository.

    Create a new local Backup Repository

    1- Select the Backup Repositories section and then select Add Backup Repository.

    4- Type repository Name, Description and then click Next.

    5- Select the Populate button, select a drive you want to use as a backup repository, and then click Next.

    Create a new Scale-out Repository

    1- Select Scale-out Repositories and then Select Add Scale-out Backup Repository.

    2- Type a Name, Description for the new Scale-out Backup Repository and then click Next.

    3- Click the Add button to add a local Extent used as Performance Tier to store metadata.

    4- Select the the backup repository and then click OK to confirm.

    6- Select Data Locality option and then click next.

    7- Select checkbox Extend scale-out repository capacity with object storage option by specifying the Wasabi repository previously created. Define also the time/age when old backups can be moved to the object storage (Wasabi object storage repository) for long-retention archival purposes. You can set the value click Apply.

    8- Click finish to create the Scale-out Repository.

    Create a Backup Job

    Create a new Backup Job to grab advantage of the Immutability feature.

    1- Select home tab, select backup job and then virtual machine.

    4- Select the object to backup and then click add.

    6- In the configuration wizard select from the Backup repository drop-down menu the just created Scale-out Repository (local backup repository Wasabi) and then click next. Follow the below instructions and finalize the Backup Job configuration.

    10- During the first performance, a Full Backup is being performed.

    Move backups to Wasabi Object Storage

    If you are willing to test the archival process into the protected bucket, after the initial Full Backup you must perform some additional backups. At least 3 to 4 additional Incremental Backups and one another Active Full Backup.

    1- To move backups immediately to the selected Wasabi Object Storage. Select your scale-out repository and then click edit scale-out repository.

    2- Select Capacity Tier option, select Move backup files older than field set to 0, and click finish.

    3- Keep the CTRL button and right-click on your Scale-out Backup Repository (Wasabi) and then select Run tiering job now.

    4- The offload process is performing and backups are moved to Wasabi Object Storage. I am testing in my test lab so I am stopping it.

    5- Login to Wasabi Console and access the Bucket used as Backup Repository. As expected, backup files have been stored in the configured Bucket.
